When should SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain NOT be used?
The product should not be used on wounds or damaged skin; if allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDs; right before or after heart surgery; with a heating pad; when sweating (such as from exercise or heat), on the face or over rashes, or if the pouch containing the patch has been open for more than 14 days (to ensure maximum effectiveness). The patch should not be used during the last trimester of pregnancy.
Is SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain Safe?
It has a proven clinical effectiveness and safety profile. The patch has been tested in clinical trials involving over 800 patients.
What is an NSAID?
An NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) is indicated for symptomatic relief of conditions where pain is present.
What are the active ingredients in SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain?
Menthol and methyl salycilate. Both are analgesics or pain relievers. Methyl salycilate is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug).
Can SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain be taken along with other oral pain relief products?
Yes, but a doctor should be consulted first and it is important to read both product labels carefully. The chance of a stomach bleed is small, but is higher if other drugs containing an NSAID are taken (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or others). If taking a diuretic, a doctor must be consulted before use. Only one patch may be used at a time.
What are the benefits of applying SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch or SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain instead of taking a pill?
Compared to pills, the chance of stomach bleeding is small. The patch delivery system allows for direct delivery of the active ingredient to the site of the pain and provides the option of discontinuing medication use. While many oral non-prescription pain relief medications require a dose every 4-6 hours, the effectiveness of SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain lasts up to 12 hours.
What is the difference between SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain and other OTC pain relief patches?
This product is the first and only FDA-approved OTC pain relief patch for the temporary relief of mild to moderate aches and pains. All other OTC pain relief patches are indicated only for minor pain. While the labeled effectiveness of other OTC pain relief patches indicates pain relief up to 8 hours, Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch and Salonpas® Arthritis Pain Relief Patch are good for up to 12 hours.
Are there any other FDA-approved over-the-counter pain relief patches available except SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain?
No. SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain is the first and only FDA-approved OTC pain relief patch.
Can children use SALONPAS® products?
All Salonpas® products, except Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch and Arthritis Patch, can be used for children 12 years old and over. Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch and Salonpas® Arthritis Patch are only approved for usage for ages 18+. Parents should speak with a pediatrician before applying Salonpas® to a child.
What is the origin of the name Salonpas®?
Our product name SALONPAS® comes from its active ingredient, Methyl Salicylate. Methyl Salicylate passes through the skin and goes directly to the site of your pain, right where it hurts. Therefore, SALONPAS® represents “Salicylate”- “Pass”.
What is the shelf-life/expiration date of SALONPAS®?
The shelf-life of SALONPAS® products are 2 to 3 years from the production date; expiration date is on package.
Is there an odorless or odor-free SALONPAS®?
If you prefer odorless SALONPAS®, we have a product called SALONPAS® HOT. SALONPAS® HOT is a large size pain relieving patch and contains Capsaicin- the active ingredient that gives you warm sensation. SALONPAS® LIDOCAINE PAIN RELIEVING GEL-PATCH is another option for unscented pain relief.
What will happen if I use SALONPAS® products with other external analgesic patch, gel, and/or cream at the same time?
If you use multiple medicines for external use, they may tend to cause skin irritation or rashes. Therefore, please do not use other external medicines when using SALONPAS®.
How soon should I expect relief?
Pain relief generally occurs within one hour of application, but in some individuals, pain relief may take shorter and some longer. Some individuals may not experience pain relief until several hours after applying.
Is it harmful to use an expired SALONPAS®?
Active ingredients in expired products may have lost effectiveness due to evaporation. Expired patches may not have adequate adhesiveness. Please use SALONPAS® prior to the expiration.
What will happen if I use SALONPAS® which is open for more than 14 days?
14 days after a package of SALONPAS® is opened, the active ingredients of SALONPAS® may have evaporated and you may not be able to obtain a good effect. So please do not use such SALONPAS® Patch.
How often can I use SALONPAS® per day?

Why can’t I use SALONPAS® for more than 7 days?
SALONPAS® temporarily relieves minor pains and aches. If your symptom persists beyond 7 days, a physician should be consulted as stated on the label. SALONPAS® and other OTC external analgesics should not be used on a continuous basis without consulting a physician.
Why remove patches after 8/12 hours? Is it harmful to apply more than 8/12 hours?
Please remove the patch from the skin after 8/12 hours application as directed (duration differs by product form: pain relief and arthritis are indicated for 12 hours of relief, all others are indicated for 8 hours of relief), since it becomes less effective and might cause skin irritation.

Is SALONPAS® resuable?
No, SALONPAS® patches are designed for one time use. They cannot be used more than once.
How many patches can I apply at a time?
Please use only one Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch, Salonpas® Arthritis Patch, Salonpas® Gel Patch Hot, or Salonpas® HOT 1ct at a time.
You can wear up to 4 other Salonpas® patches at a time.
Can I cut SALONPAS® patches?
Yes, you can cut SALONPAS® patches into any size you wish to fit your site of pain.
Is there an easy way to remove the patch?
If you have a hard time removing a SALONPAS® patch, soak the area in warm water while taking a bath for shower until the patch becomes easier to peel off.
What’s the reason I have to wash hands after applying or removing a patch?
If you touch the mucous membrane on your eyes or inside your mouth with a residue of these ingredients on your hands, it is possible that you may experience a stinging sensation or irritation. Please wash your hands thoroughly.
Why does SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain label discuss stomach bleeds?
This product carries the standard warning FDA requires on FDA-approved NSAIDs. The product has been proven to be safe and effective in a well-controlled, double-blind clinical trial. No serious NSAID-related events were reported in the clinical trial program, which evaluated over 800 patients.

If you are allergic to asprin or other NSAIDs, please do not use SALONPAS®.
Can I keep wearing a SALONPAS® patch during an MRI scan?
In some circumstances, a medicated patch can overheat during an MRI scan and cause skin burns in the immediate area of the patch. It is recommended that the patch be removed and disposed before having an MRI scan and replaced with a fresh patch after the procedure.
Does SALONPAS® make your blood pressure higher?
So far, there have been no reports of high blood pressure due to using SALONPAS® Pain Relief Patch/SALONPAS® Arthritis Pain or SALONPAS®.
Can I take SALONPAS® if I have diabetes?
Please consult your doctor before using SALONPAS® if you have diabetes.
Does SALONPAS® work for cramp?
SALONPAS® temporarily relieves aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with arthritis, simple backache, strains, bruises and sprains.
Can I use Salonpas® Pain Relief Patch / Arthritis Pain Patch if pregnant?
Ask a doctor before use while breast-feeding and during the first 6 months of pregnancy. Do not use during the last 3 months of pregnancy because it may cause problems in the unborn child or complications during delivery.

How many days should I be concerned before or after heart surgery? And if there is any specific type of heart surgery or disease make a difference?
The description follows the NSAID warning for a systemic dose: At least during hospitalization prior to, and following surgery, please do not use it. As for the periods before and after hospitalization, please consult your doctor. The risk regarding heart surgery, heart disease, age difference, etc. is not clear.
